JUNE MEETING

The Cambria Computer Club June 2008 Mac Users meeting will be held on Thursday the 5th in the Joslyn Center Conference Room at 2:00pm (doors open at 1:30). The meeting topic will be "Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 for Macintosh", presented by Rick Auricchio. According to Macworld magazine: "Adobe promised to make photo editing easier than ever, and, boy, it delivered. Brimming with new features like a Guided Edit mode, an amazing PhotoMerge Group Shot feature, and a slew of tools snatched from Photoshop CS3 tucked inside brand-new workspaces, Elements 6 makes photo editing for amateur photographers, hobbyists, and scrapbookers more accessible—and more fun—than ever before". This should be a very interesting meeting!
As usual, there will be an open forum prior to the main topic presentation, for questions and exchange of ideas. Arrive early to listen in or participate.

WHERE'S JACK?
I'll be off frolicking in Ireland and England from the 21st of May through the 11th of June. My laptop is staying in Cambria, although I will try to check my e-mail from time to time on hotel computers (the dreaded PCs). I will, however, have my digital camera and iPod with me, along with the usual charging, connecting and adapting paraphernalia. Somehow, I should be able to derive a Mac Users Group presentation from my travel experiences.

BRING A FRIEND
If you know someone who's a Mac user, but not a member of the Cambria Computer Club, invite that person to be our/your guest at one or more of our monthly Mac Users meetings. Your Club is always on the lookout for new members, new ideas and new technology; so share your interest in the Club with your neighbors and community.

I HOPE YOU CAN ATTEND THE JUNE 5TH MEETING. IF NOT, I HOPE TO SEE YOU IN JULY!

APRIL MEETING

The Cambria Computer Club April 2008 Mac Users meeting will be held on Thursday the 3rd in the Joslyn Center Conference Room at 2:00pm (doors open at 1:30). The meeting theme will be "Picnik at the Seashore", presented by Jack Hennessy. Jack will discuss and demonstrate two no-cost ways to edit digital photos and other images on your Mac - one using an online service, the other with freely downloadable open-source software. Most of us don't require elaborate, high priced imaging software to enhance the digital photos that we take. Primarily, we're interested in leveling the horizon, reducing the pixel count, changing the width/height proportions and/or improving the color of our pictures. These and many other techniques can be easily accomplished with the programs to be discussed.
As usual, there will be an open forum prior to the main topic presentation, for questions and exchange of ideas. Arrive early to listen in or participate..

MAC GEMS
Each month, Macworld magazine includes an article called "Mac Gems". The Gems are primarily shareware/donationware/freeware programs which perform specific functions (one trick ponies) to enhance your Macintosh computing experience. I have found several of these programs particularly useful and encourage you to check out the Mac Gems catalog at <http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/macgems.html>.

BEST MAC SOFTWARE
The User Group Network Info Manager highlighted a blog dedicated to finding the best open source and freeware software, specifically popular free and/or open source Macintosh software. The most popular and useful Mac OS X programs, applications and utilities, all of them are free to download, can be viewed at <http://downloadpedia.org/Best_Mac_Software>.

I HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE APRIL 3RD MEETING!

MARCH MEETING

The Cambria Computer Club March 2008 Mac Users meeting will be held on Thursday the 6th in the Joslyn Center Conference Room at 2:00pm (doors open at 1:30). The meeting topic will be "Mac OS 10.5", presented by Rick Auricchio. Rick will discuss Apple's latest version of OS X — "Leopard", what you can expect of it if you're thinking of upgrading and what you can do with it if you already have it. We are fortunate that Rick is willing to share his expertise on the newest Macintosh operating system with us.
As usual, there will be an open forum prior to the main topic presentation, for questions and exchange of ideas. Arrive early to listen in or participate.

SLOMUG
It may seem as though we are mirroring the San Luis Obispo Mac Users Group meeting topics for the last couple of months (OS X Basics and Mac OS 10.5). However, it is purely coincidental, but likely to happen again - occasionally - because both groups are dedicated to providing their members with the latest available information.

PICNIK
Photo editing is easy, fun and free online at Picnik <http://www.picnik.com/>. This service lets you modify your photos with easy to use yet powerful editing tools, tweak to your heart’s content, then get creative with many effects, fonts, shapes, and frames and, finally, save your results on your own disk drive. No download required, nothing to install and it's free! No registration required. It works something like Photoshop Elements, but with much fewer bells and whistles, and it's not limited to photographs — any JPEG image can be manipulated. If you want even more, you can upgrade to Picnik Premium for only $24.95 a year!

OPT OUT
About once a year, I offer anyone who's receiving these monthly e-mails the opportunity to have his/her name purged from the distribution list. Actually, you can contact me at any time and let me know your want out and I'll remove you. But at this time, all you need to do is reply to this e-mail and include the word "OUT" or something similarly emphatic and you're history.

I HOPE YOU CAN ATTEND THE MARCH 6TH MEETING. IF NOT, I HOPE TO SEE YOU IN APRIL!

FEBRUARY MEETING

The Cambria Computer Club February 2008 Mac Users meeting will be held on Thursday the 7th in the Joslyn Center Conference Room at 2:00pm (doors open at 1:30). The meeting theme will be "Back to Mac Basics", presented by Jack Hennessy. Jack will discuss and demonstrate basic Mac OS X features including the desktop, the dock, the Apple menu (preferences), the menu bar, the finder and the OS X file structure. As usual, there will be an open forum prior to the main topic presentation, for questions and exchange of ideas. Arrive early to listen in or participate.
If you're an experienced Mac user, please don't hesitate to attend this meeting. It's an opportunity for us to lend a helping hand to those who are still novices in computer use. With a Mac, there always seems to be more than one way to accomplish an objective, so everyone's input is important.

2008 DUES
Your 2008 Cambria Computer Club (plus your Joslyn membership) dues are payable now. Checks and cash are accepted at all Club meetings. If you were a member in 2007, we hope you'll continue to support the Club; if you haven't joined yet, there's no time like the present.

MACWORLD CONFERENCE & EXPO
I spent 3 days in January at the MacWorld wingding in San Francisco. I learned a lot and brought back lots of literature and demo disks. Ask me about it when you see me!

GRANDPERSPECTIVE
GrandPerspective is a small freeware utility application for Mac OS X that graphically shows the disk usage within a file system. It can help you to manage your disk, as you can easily spot which files and folders take up the most space. Each file is shown as a rectangle with an area proportional to the file's size. It can be downloaded at <http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/31981>

I HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE FEBRUARY 7TH MEETING!

Holiday Greetings from snowy Kansas, Mac Users!

JANUARY 2008 MEETING

The Cambria Computer Club January 2008 Mac Users meeting will be held on
Thursday the 10th* in the Joslyn Center Conference Room at 2:00pm (doors
open at 1:30). The meeting topic will be "Megapixelated: Digital Camera
Basics for Mac", presented by Jack Hennessy. This is a repeat of
previous years' presentations on the relationships involved among camera
pixel ratings, media card capacity and the resulting image sizes. Jack
will also discuss the use of software to organize and enhance your digital
images.
It is expected that this will be a highly interactive meeting, with all
participants sharing their digital photography experiences and expertise.
However, what we won't be covering are: (a.) how to operate your
personal camera, (b.) digital video and (c.) how to take great pictures
(although you might learn how to salvage some not-so-great pictures).
Since the majority of the material to be discussed is cross-platform in
nature, feel free to ask your PC using friends to join us at this
meeting.
As usual, there will be an open forum prior to the main topic
presentation, for questions and exchange of ideas. Arrive early to listen
in or participate.

*JANUARY SCHEDULE
Note that for January only the Mac Users meeting is being held on the
10th, the second Thursday of the month rather than the first Thursday
(January 3rd), because the latter occurs so close to the New Year's
holiday. Many members, including myself, will still be traveling on that
date or still have out-off-town guests to look after. Consequently, all
Cambria Computer Club meetings for January 2008 will be held one week
later than normally scheduled. We will revert to the normal schedule in
February.

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP DUES
The club is constantly endeavoring to increase its membership by offering
a variety of programs on numerous subjects relating to all levels of
computer expertise. But all of this is outreach effort is meaningless if
we don't maintain the loyalty of our core members who have supported us
through the years. So those of you who were members in 2007 are asked to
renew by paying your 2008 dues (both to the club and to the Joslyn
Center).
For those of you have attended some meetings but haven't yet joined our
club, we solicit your membership and support; if we haven't earned your
support yet, join the club anyway and make a difference!

I HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE JANUARY 10TH MEETING!

– – Jack

Hello again, Mac Users -

DECEMBER
As most of you know, the Cambria Computer Club does not hold regular
meetings during the Month of December. We are, however, throwing a
party on Thursday, December 6th, at 1:00 PM at the Joslyn Center so our
membership can socialize and enjoy the holiday season. If you're a
club member, you should have received an e-mail announcement regarding
this annual event. If you're not a member, but plan to join in 2008,
we might be able to fit you in; contact Ron Crummitt
<rcrummit@charter.net>.

JANUARY 2008
Make a note that in January 2008, the Cambria Computer Club going to
shake up its regular meeting schedule. The first Thursday occurs on
January 3rd, when most of us are still involved in holiday celebrations
(the 12 days of Christmas end on January 6th) or are decompressing. So
all of January's regular meetings will be scheduled one week later than
usual, specifically the Mac Users meeting will be held on Thursday, the
10th of January 2008 and all other January meetings will be held in
their regular sequence on succeeding Thursdays. Mark your calendars
and please don't show up on the 3rd.

ANNUAL DUES/JOSLYN CENTER
As the year turns over, we will again request that you join or renew
your membership in the Club by paying your annual dues to the Cambria
Computer Club AND to the Joslyn Center. Both organizations value your
membership and rely on your dues to support ongoing and future
programs. Some, particularly those living outside the immediate
Cambria area object to paying both Club and Joslyn dues, but the fact
of the matter is that when you enter the building for a Club meeting,
you are occupying Joslyn space, using Joslyn utilities, sitting in
Joslyn's chairs and availing yourself of equipment provided by or
stored at Joslyn. Just think what Cambria Computer Club dues would be
if we had to find (and pay for) another facility to provide for us what
we now have at Joslyn.
We are still the best computer club bargain in the area!

I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT THE DECEMBER 6, 2007 PARTY!

Hello again, Mac Users -

NOVEMBER MEETING
The Cambria Computer Club November 2007 Mac Users meeting will be held
on Thursday the 1st in the Joslyn Center Conference Room at 2:00pm
(doors open at 1:30). The meeting topic will be "How'd he do that?",
presented by Jack Hennessy. Jack will demonstrate how to use multiple
resources and applications to generate such diverse documents as 8-1/2
x 5-1/2 booklets, individualized trip maps, panoramic photo images,
presentation slides & notes, and CD/DVD labels & case liners. The idea
is to show how easy it is to get different programs and information
sources to interact with each other and produce first class results.
As usual, there will be an open forum prior to the main topic
presentation, for questions and exchange of ideas. Arrive early to
listen in or participate.

DECEMBER
As most of you know, the Cambria Computer Club does not hold meetings
during the Month of December. We do, however, throw a party so our
membership can socialize and enjoy the holiday season. Watch your
e-mail for an announcement regarding this annual event!

JANUARY 2008
In January, we're going to shake up the regular meeting schedule. The
first Thursday occurs on January 3rd, when most of us are still
involved in holiday celebrations (the 12 days of Christmas end on
January 6th) or are decompressing. So all of January's Cambria
Computer Club meetings will be scheduled one week later than usual,
specifically the Mac Users meeting will be held on Thursday, the 10th
of January 2008 and all other January meetings will be held in their
regular sequence on succeeding Thursdays. Mark your calendars!

NEXT YEAR
I've been the ringmaster of this circus for 5 or so years now and
there aren't a lot of people lined up to replace me, so I'll continue
for at least another year unless strong objections are made. But this
is your club and, as Mac users, the first Thursday of each of 11 months
is your day. I want to present material that you're interested in and
I want you to leave meetings better informed than when you arrived.
To accomplish this, I need your inputs – my e-mail address is below.
Tell me what you'd like have repeated (I've got a few presentations
"canned" by now), what new topics would be of interest and, as
appropriate, what turkeys to bury forever.
Feedback I've received recently indicates interest in Mac Basics and
Digital Cameras, so that's where we'll start out the year. After the
first couple of months, I'm open to suggestion.

I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT THE NOVEMBER 1, 2007 MEETING!

Hello again, Mac Users -

OCTOBER MEETING

The Cambria Computer Club October 2007 Mac Users meeting will be held
on Thursday the 4th in the Joslyn Center Conference Room at 2:00pm
(doors open at 1:30).
The topic will be "Personal Finance on Your Mac", presented by Jack
Hennessy. Jack will discuss and/or demonstrate financial activities
such as simple spreadsheets, digital checkbooks, online banking,
internet purchases and income tax preparation. We'll also look into
into the downside of online financial transactions and some of the
steps users can take to safeguard their identities and their fortunes.
Our PC using colleagues are also invited to attend this meeting since
most of the material covered will be equally applicable to them.
As usual, there will be an open forum prior to the main topic
presentation, for questions and exchange of ideas. Arrive early to
listen in or participate.

SEPTEMBER PRESENTATION
A .PDF copy of the September meeting script (topic: "Mac OS X Freeware
2007") has been posted on the Club website
<www.cambriacomputerclub.org> and is available for viewing and/or
download. If you missed the meeting, dozed off during the presentation
or took bad notes, you can revisit the presentation. Click on "Mac
Notes" and it's right there.

THROW YOUR HAT IN THE RING
It's that time of year again – Cambria Computer Club elections are
coming up in November and the newly elected/appointed officers and
board members will take over in January. Each year a call for
volunteers to serve in the leadership posts goes out and the silence is
deafening – particularly among the Mac using contingent. Let's turn
that around this year and get some more Mac folks into the Club
hierarchy.
Interested? If so, contact me, Ron Crummitt or any other Club officer
or director and we"ll make sure that your hat's in the ring.

I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT THE OCTOBER 4, 2007 MEETING!

JULY MEETING

The Cambria Computer Club June 2007 Mac Users meeting will be held on
Thursday the 5th in the Joslyn Center Conference Room at 2:00pm (doors
open at 1:30). The meeting topic will be "Back to OS X Basics",
presented by Jack Hennessy. Jack will show and discuss four tutorial
videos, ranging from 6 to 21 minutes in length, covering fundamentals
of the Dock, the Finder and Exposé. Between the serious tutorials,
Jack will also show some of the classic "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC"
television commercials.
As usual, there will be an open forum prior to the main topic
presentation, for questions and exchange of ideas. Arrive early to
listen in or participate.
With July 4th on a Wednesday, some folks will combine the holiday with
the previous weekend and others with the following weekend; either way,
some Mac Users will be otherwise occupied on our regular first Thursday
meeting date, the 5th. So I'll take the opportunity to respond to some
members (and non-members) requests for some basic training.
Fortunately, I've acquired a plethora tutorial videos which I hope to
use in several of our future meetings, providing they're well received
by the membership. I'll show the videos, stopping and backing up when
requested, and, as necessary, do parallel demonstrations on my laptop -
so everyone will have multiple chances to comprehend the material.
If you're an experienced Mac User, I wouldn't ignore this meeting. In
watching the videos, I've learned a few things I didn't already know
and had significant past knowledge refreshed.

CODSWALLOP
Have you ever experienced a situation where the software installed on
your Mac just wasn't adequate for the task you wanted to accomplish?
Yet, buying an expensive software package for one-time usage seemed to
be an unnecessary extravagance. Then you possibly could have used
Codswallop, The Freelancer’s Toolset: 100 Web Apps for Everything You
Will Possibly Need
<http://www.cogniview.com/convert-pdf-to-excel/post/the-freelancers-
toolset-100-web-apps-for-everything-you-will-possibly-need/>. Although
the site is primarily aimed at small business, many of us might be able
to make use of several of the applications listed.

SUMMARIZE
This is one of the more obscure features of OS X. It can be found in
the Services menu. What it does is create a summary of any text you
have selected, and you determine the length of the summary.
Apparently, this is done through a combination of identifying unique
and commonly used phrases/words and striking a balance between those
concepts emphasized through repetition and those that are unique.
Whatever, it works and is worth a try when you want to condense some
material to fit on a page or within other confines.

I hope to see you at the July 5th meeting!

aonghus@alumni.calpoly.edu

JUNE MEETING

The Cambria Computer Club June 2007 Mac Users meeting will be held on
Thursday the 7th in the Joslyn Center Main Hall (note location change
from conference room) at 2:00pm (doors open at 1:30). This is an
exceptional meeting and attendance by both members and non-members is
encouraged.

Prosoft assures me that they accept AMEX, Visa, MC, check and cash.
They will bring the product with them to sell after the meeting,
announcing the special pricing at the end of the presentation, which
they can only honor it at that time.
There will NOT be an open forum prior to the main topic presentation,
so that we can greet and chat with our guests. Save your questions
ideas and comments for July's meeting.

GMAPS PEDOMETER

If you're a walker or hiker (as I am), a runner, a bicycle rider
and/or a driver interested in determining the distance you've traveled
or are about to travel, check out Gmaps Pedometer at
<http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/>. This is a little hack that uses
Google's superb mapping application to help record distances traveled.
Just as you do at Google Maps, you drag or double-click to move the
map, use the slider to increase or decrease the zoom level and can
switch the type of imagery among Map, Satellite and Hybrid.
When you're ready to start recording the distance traveled, you click
a start recording button, position your cursor on the start pint on the
map and double-click. Thereafter, every double-click draws a point on
the map, and the distance from your last point and your cumulative
distance appear in boxes beside the map.
Additional features include: saving and printing routes, use of
english or metric units, a graph showing the elevation of each point
plotted against distance, markers placed at the end of each mile or
kilometer, as well as at the beginning or end of your course and a
calculation of how many calories you've burned if you run the course,
based your weight.

SHIFT HAPPENS

Disraeli said "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and
statistics". For those of you interested in the last of these, I call
your attention to the website at <http://www.glumbert.com/media/shift>
for a set of facts and statistical projections which I found to be
fascinating and maybe a little bit scary. Fasten your set belts!

I looking forward to seeing a large enthusiastic group at the June 7th
Meeting)! So contact all of your Mac using relatives, friends and
associates; let's have a big turnout of Central Coast Mac people for
what should prove to be an outstanding event.

aonghus@alumni.calpoly.eduGreetings Mac Users…

MAY MEETING

The Cambria Computer Club May 2007 Mac Users meeting will be held on
Thursday the 3rd in the Joslyn Center Conference Room at 2:00pm (doors
open at 1:30). Jack (that's me) will be out of town on that day, but
arrangements have been made to show a couple of instructional videos
dealing with ways to keep your OS X system performing properly. These
are lower to mid intermediate level presentations containing
information of value to all Mac users.
As usual, there will be an open forum prior to the main topic
presentation, for questions and exchange of ideas. Arrive early to
listen in or participate.

PAST PRESENTATIONS

.pdf versions of two of the Mac User Group presentations given earlier
this year are available for download from the Club website
<http://www.cambriacomputerclub.org/>. Click on "Mac Notes ", then on
"DIGITAL CAMERA BASICS FOR MAC PRESENTATION" and/or "INTERNET & E-MAIL
BASICS FOR MAC PRESENTATION" to download.

OPT OUT

Once a year or so, I try to clean up my mailing list for these
announcements. So, if you'd like to be removed, send me an e-mail and
you will be expunged!

JUNE MEETING

Just another reminder that the Cambria Computer Club's June 7th Mac
Users Meeting will feature Jennifer Bell and Gordon Bell from Prosoft
Engineering of Pleasanton CA <www.prosofteng.com>. They will be going
over Prosoft's award-winning line up of Macintosh utilities, which
allow you to back up, recover, maintain and manage your important data.
Mark your calendar now and alert your Mac user friends. Let's have a
big turnout of Central Coast Mac people for what should prove to be a
very interesting meeting.

I hope you can attend the May 3rd meeting (as well as the June 7th
Meeting)!

APRIL MEETING

The Cambria Computer Club April 2007 Mac Users meeting will be held on
Thursday the 5th in the Joslyn Center Conference Room at 2:00pm (doors
open at 1:30). The meeting topic will be "Macintosh Security &
Backups", presented by Rick Auricchio. Subjects Rick will discuss
include: Phishing update, evil web sites, Apple security updates,
direct attacks via the Internet, router attack (reprogramming your
router if it has the default password), disk failure security risk,
backup software and burning data to CD or DVD.
As usual, there will be an open forum prior to the main topic
presentation, for questions and exchange of ideas. Arrive early to
listen in or participate.

REJUVENATE

The April issue of Mac|Life magazine includes a very good article
about improving the performance of your Mac. One of the suggested
actions, if you're running OS X 10.3.9 or higher, is to remove the
foreign language support and reclaim almost a gigabyte of hard disk
space.
Unless you're really into Dzongkha, Esperanto, Estonian, etc., you'll
never make use of these files. To get rid of them, download a free
program called Monolingual (monolingual.sourceforge.net) and follow the
included instructions to check off the language modules you'll never
need. Be sure to retain the English and English (United States)
modules – if you don't you'll most likely have to reinstall OS X.
Also, there is concern about certain newer Adobe products not
performing properly when foreign language support is removed. This is
addressed in the Monolingual website under "FAQ". If you have any
doubts, don't delete anything.

MAC|LIFE

Mac|Life is a new Macintosh based magazine, evolving from the previous
Mac Addict with an entirely new format. Cambria Computer Club members
are eligible for a discounted subscription rate through our Apple User
Group affiliation. Contact me if you're interested and I'll connect
you.

JUNE MEETING

Just a reminder that the Cambria Computer Club's June 7th Mac Users
Meeting will feature Jennifer Bell and Gordon Bell from Prosoft
Engineering of Pleasanton CA (www.prosofteng.com). They will be going
over Prosoft's award-winning line up of Macintosh utilities, which
allow you to back up, recover, maintain and manage your important data.
Mark your calendar now and let's have a big turnout for what should
prove to be a very interesting meeting.

I hope to see you at the April 5th meeting (as well as the June 7th
Meeting)!

Greetings Mac Users…

MARCH MEETING

The Cambria Computer Club March 2007 Mac Users meeting will be held on
Thursday the 1st in the Joslyn Center Conference Room at 2:00pm (doors
open at 1:30). The meeting topic will be "Megapixelated: Digital
Camera Basics for Mac", presented by Jack Hennessy. This is a repeat
of January 2006's discussion on the relationships involved among camera
pixel ratings, media card capacity and the resulting image sizes. Jack
will also discuss the use of software to enhance your digital images –
including Photoshop Elements, iPhoto, iMovie, Aperture, Picasa and
iView Media Pro.
It is expected that this will be a highly interactive meeting, with
all participants sharing their digital photography experience and
expertise. However, what we won't be covering are: (a.) how to operate
your personal camera, (b.) digital video and (c.) how to take great
pictures (although you might learn how to salvage some not-so-great
pictures). Since the majority of the material to be discussed is
cross-platform in nature, our PC using members are welcome to join us
at this meeting.
As usual, there will be an open forum prior to the main topic
presentation, for questions and exchange of ideas. Arrive early to
listen in or participate.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME

In 2007, several countries and regions will change the dates on which
they observe Daylight Saving Time (DST). In the United States, all
states except Arizona and Hawaii will begin observing Daylight Saving
Time on March 11. DST rule changes for the United States and most of
Canada are already available in Mac OS X 10.4.5 (released February,
2006) or later. However, some additional regions have recently adopted
time zone and DST changes.
Apple is providing software updates for Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4 and later
based on worldwide time zone information available as of January 8,
2007. To make sure that your Mac's clock maintains the proper time,
simply connect to the internet and install the update for your computer
which you'll find under the Apple Menu by clicking System Preferences
then Software Update. You should install the update even if your
computer is used in a time zone that is not affected.
For Mac OS X 10.4 and Mac OS X Server 10.4 Tiger, install Mac OS X
Tiger 10.4.8 and the Daylight Saving Time Update.
For Mac OS X 10.3 and Mac OS X Server 10.3 Panther, install Mac OS X
Panther 10.3.9 and the Daylight Saving Time Update.
In addition to the Mac OS X updates listed above, the Java environment
requires an additional update for compatibility with the time zone and
DST changes described above. For Mac OS X 10.4 and Mac OS X Server
10.4, install Java for Mac OS X 10.4, Release 5. For Mac OS X 10.3 and
Mac OS X Server 10.3, install Java for Mac OS X 10.3, Update 5.

If you're still using Mac OS X 10.2.8 or earlier, you can adjust your
clock manually using Date & Time preferences. Deselect the option to
set date and time automatically, then set the time for your local time
zone as needed.
Still using Mac OS 9.2? Use the Date and Time control panel to
deselect the option to observe Daylight Saving Time changes
automatically, then enable Daylight Saving Time manually.

Applications that run in Classic environment in Mac OS X will honor
the Daylight Saving Time setting in Mac OS X.

JUNE MEETING

At the Cambria Computer Club's June 7th Mac Users Meeting, Jennifer
Bell and Gordon Bell from Prosoft Engineering of Pleasanton CA
(www.prosofteng.com), will be demonstrating a new software program, Jax
for iPod. Jax is a revolutionary program that opens iTunes and your
iPod to a whole new universe of possibilities. They will also be going
over their award-winning line up of Macintosh utilities including: Data
Rescue II, Drive Genius, Picture Rescue and Data Backup 3. These
programs allow you to back up, recover, maintain and manage your
important data.
We are indeed gratified to have Jennifer and Gordon as our guest
presenters at this meeting; fortunately for us, they have a personal
commitment in Cambria the following weekend and were willing to come
early and participate in our meeting. Mark your calendar now for what
should prove to be a very interesting meeting.

I hope to see you at the March 1st meeting (as well as the June 7th
Meeting)!

Holiday Greetings, Mac Users -

JANUARY MEETING
The Cambria Computer Club 2007 Mac Users activity hits the ground
running with its January meeting to be held on Thursday the 4th in the
Joslyn Center Conference Room at 2:00pm (doors open at 1:30).
The meeting topic will be "Internet & E-Mail Basics for Mac",
presented by Jack Hennessy. This meeting is for users with limited
experience as well as for more seasoned individuals interested in a
tuneup. Topics I'll discuss include connecting, communicating,
surfing, searching, shopping, gaming and financial transactions.
Things we are doing today on the internet were unthought of 3 or 4
years ago, and with players like Google and Yahoo in the mix, the
future potential is mind boggling. To take advantage of new
developments, we need to stay up to date with our knowledge, tools and
techniques.
As usual, there will be an open forum prior to the main topic
presentation, for questions and exchange of ideas. Arrive early to
listen in or participate.

MEMBERSHIP DUES
It's that time of year again (the beginning) and your annual Cambria
Computer Club dues are payable. Club dues are $15 per person, plus
Joslyn Center annual member ship of $25 per person. The Joslyn
membership is a one-time payment for participation in all clubs and
activities sponsored by the Center (although some of these have their
own individual dues requirements). Remember, it's the Joslyn Center
that provides your Computer Club with accommodations for over 40
meetings per year as well as storage for our equipment.
You can pay your dues at any Club meeting. When you pay your dues,
you'll be asked to fill out a questionnaire about your computer
interests and usage (available for download at
<www.cambriacomputerclub.org>). This form is an important vehicle for
the Board of Directors to assess the needs and preferences of the
membership and to plan programs accordingly.

INTERNET BROWSERS
In my research for the January meeting presentation, I discovered a
website that is worth a visit by anyone who spends significant time on
the internet. <www.macorchard.com/www/> contains a comprehensive
listing of internet browsers for Macintosh, with descriptions/reviews
for each. If you're not satisfied with what you're getting from
Safari/Internet Explorer/Firefox, you might want to take a look at some
viable alternatives.

MACWORLD
I will be attending the Macworld Conference and Expo in San Francisco,
January 8 though 12. I plan to touch as many bases as I can, but to
concentrate on user groups (like us) and training. However, if anyone
out there has a specific area of interest you'd like me to look into,
send me an e-mail or contact me at the meeting on the 4th.

I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT THE JANUARY 4, 2007 MEETING!
