Leader: Jack Hennessy

The Mac User program varies monthly and is adapted to members' levels of experience and interests.

SEPTEMBER 9th MEETING
The Cambria Computer Club September 2010 Mac Users meeting will be held on Thursday the 9th in the Joslyn Center Conference Room at 2:00pm (doors open at 1:30). The topic will be "Mac OS X Freeware 2010", presented by Jack Hennessy. In this annual survey, Jack will discuss and/or demonstrate a number of useful and frivolous OS X applications that you can download and use at no charge. He'll also discuss the origins of and pitfalls in some of these packages and why you might want to exercise caution.
As usual, there will be an open forum prior to the main topic presentation, for questions and exchange of ideas. Arrive early to listen in or participate. Any questions contact Jack at aonghus@alumni.calpoly.edu

OS X HIDDEN GEMS
Have you ever noticed that a little dark circle or dot that appears within the "close" button (red button in the upper left corner) of a document window in OS X? I hadn't either. It's telling you that you haven't saved your work. It’s a nice touch and it's one of many other subtle elements you and I probably have missed over the years. Fortunately a list of these has been gathered up and it can be found at http://theappleblog.com/2010/01/29/os-x-hidden-gems/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+TheAppleBlog+(TheAppleBlog)

MAIL A BIG FILE
Occasionally, we all need to transfer files that potentially won't fit through one server or the other. Many ISP's limit the size of files that can be attached to an e-mail, often as little as 10 or 20 MB's is the maximum size. Or perhaps you've been the recipient of a large file by e-mail in the past and found that you have to wait eternally while it downloads before you can see the rest of your e-mails.
Well, now there's an alternative - and it won't cost you a penny. MailBigFile.com will act as middle man. And the good news is that it is free. Although there are limits on the number of available days, number of downloads and a file size. However, if you need more, they do have a Pro version available for a minimal fee.
It easy to use - 3 simple steps: (1) Sender uploads the file; (2) Recipient receives an email, with a web link to download it; (3) Recipient downloads file. That's all there is to it. It's web based - no software to download. And it features a progress meter.

REMOVAL
Another thing I do on an (almost) annual basis is offer those who receive these announcements the opportunity to no longer receive them. If you'd like to have your name removed from the mailing list, send me an e-mail stating so and it will be done!

I HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE SEPTEMBER 9TH MEETING!
