Computer Club Plays 'cyber Santa' for Students

"You know, it’s so hard to pick up the paper anymore or listen to the news on the radio for all the strife in the world. Then, there’s the bits of good news my friend Janet brought to me.

Cambria has more than its fair share of angels within the community, doing their best to lessen the load of others. I recently found out about a group — the Cambria Computer Club — that is continuing the tradition.

One of the many clubs run through the Joslyn Recreation Center, the Computer Club’s mission is to help folks improve their computer skills and network with others who enjoy the medium. On top of that, the club does community outreach with the Computers4Kids program. When the club has reconditioned computers available, it gives them to Coast Union High School students who need one.

I spoke with school counselor Cheryl Seay, who said the club came to her last year with a unit to give away. She and staff chose a student to give it to, but upon learning the club planned on making this a regular offering, she decided to change her tack, creating an application form that any student in need could fill out, “to make it more fair.”

Ms. Seay says there are quite a number of students who don’t have computers in their homes, which often hinders a child’s ability to complete homework assignments that need to be typed and researched. Mind you, someone participating in sports or other extracurricular activities won’t have access to the library because it’s closed when they have time to study.

Computer Club Vice President Janet Janszen put me onto this story after her visit to the school and meeting the lucky student with his new equipment."  Lady Ti Di, Cambrian
